A spokesperson for Cardinal Dolan released a statement on his behalf on January 25, 2019 after the Catholic Governor of New York signed a bill that legalized abortion on demand until birth. The statement said, “excommunication should not be used as a weapon.” It also said, “notable canon lawyers have said that, under canon law, excommunication is not an appropriate response to a politician who supports or votes for legislation advancing abortion.” It added that, “I do not believe that excommunication would be effective as many politicians would welcome it as a sign of their refusal to be ‘bullied by the Church.'” The statement was issued after several other U.S. bishops said they would likely excommunicate those Catholics who supported the bill.
