Bishop Scharfenberger rejected a proposal put forth by Cardinal Wuerl of Washington that would’ve had the bishops investigate their own sexual misconduct. Scharfenberger said that for the bishops to have any credibility and to have the trust of the faithful, lay Catholics will need to be involved in the process of investigating sexual abuse misconduct claims. Scharfenberger was the lone bishop in the entire country to strongly oppose Wuerl’s plan.
