Bishop Scharfenberger told Fox News on January 28th that “Excommunication is a last resort” for New York’s Governor Cuomo but if he “continues to distance himself from” Catholicism, it may, “unfortunately, result in that.” Scharfenberger was referring to Cuomo’s decision to sign into law a bill that allows abortions to take place up until birth. “One can put themselves in the position whereby morally they cannot receive Communion at the altar rail,” he added. “And I think the Governor is in that situation right now.”
