In 2018, a Catholic school in Billings had a homosexual couple serve as co-chairs of its annual fundraiser. A priest alumnus of the school wrote a statement on Facebook urging Catholics to not support the fundraiser. Bishop Warfel issued a statement on April 18 saying he believes the school provides a “solid presentation” of the faith to its students. He also said Pope Francis has explained that there is a difference between “being gay and being a part of a gay lobby.” Francis has “urged frequent confession as a means to address” homosexuality, he wrote. Warfel closed his letter by providing extensive quotations from the Catechism on homosexuality.
